“You are TOO COMPLEX to be anyone else’s narrative” ~ Childish Gambino
I was trying to decide what to write for today's post I started to think about where we are at in our lives right now. And where we are is a place in which a lot of what we do and how we survive is out of our control. And as someone who HATES not having control of what goes on in his life...this has been very difficult for me. But, despite how it may seem, we have a lot more control than we think. Why? Because we are just too complex to have someone else or the situations OUT of our control write our story.
As someone who believes that we as people were created by God in His own image I also believe that He did not make any one of us exactly the same. Sometimes we make look similar or act similar but we ourselves, at our core, are all very different. So, why do we spend our whole lives striving to be like others?
The complexity of being a human being is honestly mind blowing to me. The ways our bodies, minds, and souls function is so deep and so complex that I don’t believe any one person completely understands. And yet, as individuals we idealize others and their lives as if they know any better than we do. The people that APPEAR to know better simply know THEMSELVES better. They have figured out that no matter what they are going to write their own narrative.
In life we are faced with our own deck of cards. Some cards are great and some are just terrible. But they are OUR cards. It’s OUR hand that we are dealt. And no mater how many times you try to trade your hand with someone else’s, everyone has a few bad cards.
That’s the problem with idealizing someone else’s life. You may not know their problems or the issues they face and if you try and chase after their narrative, you may not be able to handle the cards they’ve been dealt. Why? Because it’s not YOURS. The cards you’re dealt, although sometimes similar, are uniquely yours.
So God created human beings[a] in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them - Genesis 1:27. We are created in the likeness of God. Think about that...In the likeness of the One who created everything and everyone. You’re too complex. The life you’re supposed to live is too beautiful. The dreams you’ve specifically been dreaming are too important. Everyone has a narrative and it’s being written every single day. So make sure it’s YOUR narrative. Your life and your story are too complex to fall into someone else’s.
